Chattanooga 1862

The Scandinavian Regiment and the Capture of Chattanooga in 1862

"My victories were at least as important as many others. Yet still they are forgotten – perhaps because they were not written in blood?"

These words are said to have been spoken by General William Starke Rosecrans. He was the architect behind one of the most important and possibly most brilliant campaigns of the American Civil War. The result was the capture of Chattanooga – the town that was the key to control of the South. The Scandinavian Regiment played a major part in this story.

The battle of Prokhorovka on July 12th, 1943 has gone down in history as the greatest tank battle of all time. Recent historical research has revealed that for a long time Soviet authorities gave an inaccurate description of the battle in order to cover up their defeat. Christer Bergström, a leading expert on the Second World War, shows in this article that there are still important aspects of this famous battle that have yet to be uncovered.

HMS Prince of Wales 1941

The Sinking of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse in the South China Sea in December 1941.

Japan had been at war with China since 1937 and attacked Soviet territory in August, 1939. They were beaten by Soviet forces led by General Zhukov, the future hero of the tough battles against Hitler on the eastern front. In September 1940 the Japanese attacked Indochina (North Vietnam) to block the supply of military material from French controlled Vietnam to the Chinese liberation army.
